Oztech reference gases are intended for use as
working standards for gas isotope ratio mass spectrometers with dual inlet systems. Each
cylinder contains at least a year's supply of gas that has been calibrated relative to the
appropriate internationally accepted IAEA primary standards, which allows analyses to be
immediately and confidently reported relative to V-SMOW, PDB, or AIR. The cylinders attach
directly and quickly to the dual inlet system of a gas mass spectrometer via a ¼"
Swagelok fitting
Use of these standards eliminates the need for daily or monthly preparation and
calibration of working standards and eliminates the practice of freezing back a
potentially fractionated working standard into the standard reservoir. Use of the
reference gases allows sample preparation error to be separated from mass spectrometer
error and enables long term records on mass spectrometer performance to be easily
maintained. Interlaboratory comparison or round robins can be put on a firm basis.
The reference gases are supplied in 1-liter steel cylinders at a pressure of 25 psi. Each
cylinder is filled from a reservoir of known composition, and 10 to 15 aliquots are drawn
and analyzed on a Finnigan MAT 252. The composition relative to the international
standards is reported on the cylinder. For both CO2 and H2, we have
assembled sets of gases that span the range of natural variation for C, O, and H. With a
set of three gases and a strict procedural protocol, there is no possibility of undetected
standard drift or contamination. Desired compositions of H2 can
be specially made for people wishing to have enriched standards for doubly labeled water
work.
For N2, we currently have only one standard, near AIR.
We do not have an SO2 standard because of the problems related to making the
correction for O isotopes.
